New Book / No Book Blog

Hello again,

Well, this short blog is to somewhat celebrate the recent publication of our new book: the Routledge Handbook of Sports and Exercise Therapy (2024) (please click on the blue hyperlinks):

In a nutshell, it is the second edition of our last one: the Routledge Handbook of Sports Therapy, Injury Assessment and Rehabilitation (2016):

Whilst it is a second edition, it is in reality a complete re-write. It has been a massive personal and collaborative undertaking, but I am extremely proud that it has all finally come together, and is now available (in hardback or e-book version). Overall, I am extremely pleased with it. It is quite a tome! Even if I say so myself (“Tome is often used to refer to a book that is not only really large, but also unusually important”). We cover so much of what I believe is essential contemporary and foundational ground, so that there is almost certainly going to be something for everyone who is in any way involved in our profession. I think it is particularly useful for new students of sports and exercise therapy.

This blog is presented following an initial blog piece I wrote for the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) – see here. And below is a montage of illustration extracts from each chapter of the book. I think this clearly illustrates its depth and breadth:

In an attempt to support the usual and expected strategy for launching a new book, I did, this time, experiment with the production of a set of multi-media presentations. Please do take a look on my YouTube channel (sports and exercise therapy playlist) – and you may identify that I at least like to try to be detailed and informative, as well as interesting and creative – and that my modus operandi is to balance seriousness with humorousness. There are some mini-lectures and webinars on the channel too, which may be of interest.

No Book.

So, if you survived some of those multi-media presentations, you might be ready for one or two more. No Book was a poem that I originally wrote around 2003 after completing and publishing my first book, Hands On Sports Therapy (Cengage, 2004):

Hands On Sports Therapy (the book), as I have become aware, is quite fondly remembered by some seasoned practitioners (and tutors) as it (perhaps) assisted in their (very) early learning (it was recommended reading for many sports massage and early sports therapy courses in the 2000’s). Of course, this was clearly a different era and, gosh, how times have changed in the professional and educational landscape. I’ve even cut my ponytail!

The No Book poem is all about what you’ve got if you’ve not got a book – or in simpler words, what you might actually need to have in place and consideration if you actually want to write (and publish) a book. I recorded an audio version of the poem in 2008. After finally completing the new handbook, it felt like a good time to re-visit the old poem. I ended up doing an update to the words, and brought in an auto-voiced duo to support the delivery (rather than reciting it myself this time)… I hope you enjoy (or at least understand)! It probably needs a couple of careful listens to digest it all…

You’re highly likely to be exposed to further poetic productions if you check in with my YouTube channel (poetry and music playlists) again (so I do apologise in advance!).

I hope you found this interesting. Stay tuned, keep well, and I’ll see you later : ))
